Ground Cover

Usually evergreen and small, they serve as accents to larger shrubs (Azalea, Holly, Rhododendron, Cherry Laurel, Boxwood and Yew).

They can be planted in clusters or in rows to outline driveway or walkway. GCs also can be planted on the perimeter of a flagstone patio.

GCs are low-maintenance alternatives to annuals (Begonia, Impatiens, Vinca, Marigold, Snapdragon, Cosmos and Petunia) and perennials since they don't die or have die-back. So, 12 months a year, they keep their appearance.

Examples of GC are: Dwarf Nandina 'Firepower,' Juniper ('Blue Rug,' 'Blue Pacific' or 'Blue Star'), Skimmia, Liriope, Sweet Box, Barberry 'Crimson Pygmy,' Dwarf Boxwood, Bearberry, Heather, Hosta and Chinese Hosta)
